“Estamos hechos de polvo de estrellas.”

Awakening from the destruction and disbelief of a 7.9 earthquake, the coastal peoples of Ecuador began to pick up the pieces. They moved rubble, cried over lost loved ones and somehow found a way face the future. It took a month before music was heard again. After two months, a band was heard playing among the UN relief tents on the old soccer field.

Life was continuing. Babies were being born. Abuelas stood guard over them that first night while their parents danced and learned to smile again. The niños were lined up on a large blanket, wrapped tightly in traditional swaddling – left to stare at the stars from which they came.

Especially during challenging times, it’s worth remembering that not only are we living in the universe, but the universe is living in us. We are all made of stardust.

COSMIC TAPESTRY CREATIVITY RETREAT April 8-17

For 10 days we were Ecuador. We grew into each day’s touring adventure by interpreting it with writing, painting, cooking and jewelry-making. We let the creative life soak into our souls. Of course, the earthquake on the last evening of the retreat was an unplanned growing experience. That’s when I knew how wise these women really were.
A few weeks later at our reunion, each person told me how much they grew from this retreat. The consensus was that when they packed their bags, some small part of Ecuador’s adventurous spirit went home in their hearts. Viva la Creatividad!

WHAT’S NEXT WITH SIGRID??

Having just celebrated one year in Ecuador, I am more inspired than ever. I am working on a series of paintings that capture local life here and hoping to do a museum exhibition next year. I also have a book in mind…but more on that story later. For now, I’m recommitting to building Cosmic Tapestry and getting this blog out regularly. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
