Desert Princess

I lived in Iran during my high school years. Things were a little different for Americans during the time of the Shah than they are now. I’m so sorry that current politics keep our people apart because Iranian families are some of the most interesting and gracious friends I’ve known.

Nonetheless, life as a woman in Iran has always been challenging. As a teenager, I was fortunate that my parents took me along when they traveled about the tribal lands of the Kurds. I recall meeting one young woman who was my age, and I remember thinking how very different her life was from mine.

When I get weary with taking responsibility for my life, I remember how very fortunate I am to be a woman who can make so many choices about her life.

I wonder where that Kurdish girl is today?
